HOUSE FIRE.

The second-story apartment perched above a shop front was billowing smoke from the roof while the bright red glow of the interior screamed bad news. And worse, there were no residents on the lawn out front.

Two engines, a ladder and a medic had responded, Cap shouting orders the moment boots were on the ground as we tried to work out if anyone was home. No one had seen the elderly couple or their fox terrier since the neighbors called 9-1-1.

“North and Tibbs, get your masks on. Both of you are on search and rescue.” Cap pointed to the building. “Do not take any chances.”

“Gotcha, Cap.”

“All good, Cap.”

We shouted out our matched responses while lines tried to make a dent in the flames. It was hard to see where it was coming from so we entered through the metal fire escape on the side. Last thing we needed was the roof collapsing, and until we had confirmation exactly where the fire was, going in blind wasn’t only stupid but dangerous as well.

I hauled myself up the stairs, taking the rungs two at a time as I climbed to the second floor. Tibbs was right on my ass, both of us hoping it was going to be a rescue and not a recovery.

“Looks like it’s coming from the north.” My hand pointed to the side. “I’m going in.”

Glass exploded as I swung my axe, clearing the shards from the edges before I poked my head inside. The room was filled with smoke, but it wasn’t on fire just yet, my hand signaling to Tibbs we were going in.

It was hard enough for someone my size to get through a window, but add the turnouts and a breathing apparatus and it was one hell of a squeeze. Not that I let that stop me, barreling through the hole I’d created and stepping in.

“Hello?” I called out, even though I knew it wouldn’t do much good. Between the water, the fire and my voice being muted by the mask, no one was hearing anything.

Tibbs was beside me, our time starting to run out as we moved deeper into the thick black cloud. We had one shot to find these people and it was already getting toasty.

The living room was clear, no people or pets—living or otherwise—so we moved down the hall.

Fuck.

A closed door was alight, and I had to hope whoever we were looking for wasn’t in there. It looked like it could be a bedroom, but we couldn’t be sure. The flames licked under the frame spreading across the hall and making it difficult to get to the rear of the house. But there was another closed door, a dim light peering underneath the jamb through the smoke further down. That had to be where they were, trapped by flames with no direct way out.

As I plowed through the door, I heard a distinctive cough. Someone was in there, momentarily relieved to see a shivering figure huddled in a corner under wet towels.
